New twin data center gains TÜV accreditation

Outstanding security and efficiency provided by cutting-edge datacentres in Hamburg and Norderstedt.

The twin datacentre in Hamburg and Norderstedt has been awarded the Level 4 Security Certificate by TÜViT, making it only the second datacentre anywhere in Germany to gain such accreditation. The entire infrastructure was reviewed, including its systems for protection against fire and break-ins, its emergency power and electricity supply and its maintenance and operational processes. Norderstedt Utilities (Stadtwerke Norderstedt) and akquinet AG built the modern research centres between 2011 and 2013. akquinet runs both as integration operations.

To mark the award of the TÜViT certificate, Norderstedt Utilities and akquinet held a function for invited guests. Jens Seedorff, Norderstedt Utilities Plant Director, said at the start of the event: "Along with exploiting renewable sources of energy, efficiency is for us the key to playing an active role in shaping the switch to new forms of energy at a local authority level. With the new twin datacentre we and akquinet are jointly putting this guiding principle into action."

A new dimension in data center services

Individually, the new data centers have now been awarded the TÜViT '"Level 3 Extended" certificate and together as a twin data center with a mutual back-up system no less than the '"Level 4" certificate, TÜViT's highest level of certification. Antonius Sommer, Chief Executive of TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH, presented the certificates to Jens Seedorff and Dirk Aagaard, Executive Director of akquinet AG. The criteria tested by the TÜV included structural aspects, such as dedicated fire zones, security systems such as access controls and protection against break-ins and the provision of power, including emergency supplies for the IT and security systems. They also checked processes, such as maintenance cycles and regular testing of all functions. Dirk Aagaard commented on the significance of the certificate: "We are forging ahead with this into what is for us a new dimension of datacentre services. Clients are getting maximum security and efficiency at a level that hardly any datacentre is able to deliver."

Dataport aims to react purposefully to rising demand

The biggest user of the twin data center's capacities is Dataport AöR, the IT service provider for the public administration departments of the federal states of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen and Saxony-Anhalt, for the tax offices of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Lower Saxony and for the local authorities in Schleswig-Holstein. Over recent years, Dataport had standardised and modernised it heterogeneous datacentre infrastructure. "Dataport processes data for public administration departments of six sponsoring federal states and local authorities, including sensitive data, such as citizen registration details. Our requirements in terms of IT security and data protection are therefore very high. The TÜV certification adds to the recently obtained BSI basic protection certificate, which covers, in unique depth, infrastructures and datacentre services as well. Both certificates, the certification to the national standard for IT security and the TÜV certificate, confirm to us that we can expect a maximum level of security and data confidentiality in our new datacentre infrastructures", said Dr. Johann Bizer, Executive Chairman of Dataport, commenting on the utilisation of the twin data center.

It was only in May that Dataport also received the certificate of BSI basic protection for the datacentres. That is the security standard of the Federal Office for Information Security prescribed by the IT planning council. What is unique about this anywhere in Germany is the depth of the certification: in addition to the building infrastructure, it also covers networks, datacentre services and services for operating client processes.

Twin datacentres verifiably energy-efficient

Data centers use extreme amounts of energy and are very costly: Globally their operation accounts for around two per cent of total energy consumption. The figure used to evaluate the efficiency of energy used in datacentres is the PUE value (power usage effectiveness). Currently running at round 80 per cent of capacity, the new twin datacentre has at present a PUE value of 1.4. The calculated target value at full capacity is 1.29. Outdated data centers can by contrast have a PUE value of 3. akquinet is running the data centers as integration operations and of its workforce there at least 40 per cent are individuals with disabilities.
